The summer here at Union Mills has been personally gratifying for many reasons. It has indeed been a busy time and the days have flown by. Special events such as the Volksmarch, the Antique car exhibits, Theatre by the Millstream, and of course the Corn Roast have all helped bring attention to our cause.
Volunteers such as Dick Peeling, Jim Shriver and Chuck Ives deserve a thanks for volunteering when I was not available. Many interested visitors have expressed their appreciation at having an opportunity to learn more about this significant segment of American history. Some of our guests have made a return trip, and brought friends or relatives with them. Still others have sent information about other mills, or recipes, or photos, or just a note of thanks.
Sales of flour have been brisk. The total volume of flour sold increased by 20% over last year. All milling equipment has worked well through the summer months. As of this writing, the wheat stones are being “dressed” so we can continue to provide a high quality flour. Additional chairs and tables appropriated from the County are now located on the second floor of the Mill making this area more versatile for group activities.
As the fall season begins, and scores of school children visit, we endeavor to improve our presentation so these students will see some relevancy in the history of Union Mills.
