SPOOM Mid-Atlantic Chapter Meeting
March 27-28, 2009

The Spring gathering of the SPOOM Mid-Atlantic Chapter will be on March 27,28, 2009 at the Union Mills Homestead in Carroll County, Maryland.

There will be two optional events on Friday 3/27 beginning at 9 AM at Union Mills.  (Beverages, pastries, and fruit will be available between 8 and 9.)

1.) A hands-on workshop on “mill stone maintenance.”  Participants will have an opportunity to lift a runner stone and turn it over; clean out residual flour; practice some stone dressing; check that bed stone is plumb and level; return the runner to its place on the spindle; reassemble stone furniture; and test run the stones using wheat.  This will be an all day event, and a $20 fee will be assessed at sign up.  The fee will cover lunch which will be available on site.  If time permits, there will be a tour of the Shriver Homestead.

2.) A “History tour” of the region will include touring at least two mills; driving by at least two more mills; lunch on your own in Gettysburg; a restored country store; and a tour of the Shriver Homestead if time permits.  There is no fee for this tour.  Carpooling is encouraged; and a guide will be provided.

Arrangements will be made with a local restaurant near Union Mills, for those who would like to gather for supper.

On Saturday 3/28, the second floor of the Shriver Mill will be the site for the day’s activities. Your customary $5 donation at registration will cover lunch costs; with residual going to the Chapter treasury.   Pastries, fruit and beverages will be available between 8 and 9 AM.  There will be an agenda available for the business meeting which starts at 9. There will be  time following the  business meeting for a roundtable discussion led by Judy Grove on the proposed approach to developing the 2011 bi-centennial celebration of Mid-Atlantic milling.

Lunch will be ready at noon, immediately followed by our speaker, Chapter member Christopher Gillis, who will discuss his newly published book, Wind Power.  Finally, a round-table discussion will provide you an opportunity to discuss any mill related topic.  Feel free to roam through the mill whenever you have spare time.  We will produce stone-ground whole wheat flour while you are visiting.
