March 1, 1889

Bessy is still in Pittsburgh. I helped to sweep the room and library. After dinner beat up a sponge cake. Aunt Kate came over and stayed for supper. Papa was in Westminster to day and he brought me a doll and I am going to give it to Emma Stonesifer I began to read Falconberg and I finished it. The water was dreadfully high yesterday the meadows were all over with water. I wrote to Bessy this morning. After supper Cousin Frank, Aunt Kate, and Cousin Moll came over and told us about the earthquake but we had not felt it. After dinner Mamma made some gelatine. In the evening Papa and Mamma went over to see Cousin Lum and Cousin Cora. On Sunday in the afternoon Cousin Lum and Cora came over to see us. Uncle Lou and Harry staid down at Aunt Marys for dinner. I asked Aunt Kate and Cousin Molly to come over and stay for supper. Mamma made two sponge cakes and we went to the farm for a bucket of milk. After supper Cousin Frank and Miss Florence came over and they played cards all evening. It is beautiful today. I worked a half an hour at my waiter napkin and practiced twenty minutes. Papa and Mamma went to Westminster and they brought us each a pair of scissors and seven paint brushes and Papa bought me this book. I began this diary when I was thirteen years old. Papa bought a Puck today. The earthquake was on the 8 of March and the high water was on was on [sic] the 4. I got this book on the 12 of March.

Wed 13 Today is beautiful. Catherine and myself rolled our hoops over to town this morning and we had a good time. After dinner Catherine and myself were amusing ourself making mud boys and girls and we each made our initials. In the afternoon we went walking with Miss Florence, Madeline, Hilda and Helen over to the farm. I am trying to draw the mill. I drew one today but it did not get very nice.

Thur 14 Today is beautiful. I heard Harrys reading and geography this morning. In the afternoon I drew another picture of the mill and got it a little better than the first one, while I was drawing Madeline came down and then we went and made mud cakes and had a good time.

Friday 15 It is cloudy out. Bessy has been five weeks out in Pittsburgh. In the afternoon Catharine and I were making cakes out of clay and Uncle Lou made us each a print to print it with.

Sat 16 It is cloudy still but I think it will clear off by tomorrow. Leander Lookingbill has sale to day. In the afternoon Catharine and I went over to town for molasses. I finished reading the story I was reading. It is called Nicholas Minturn and I liked it very much. Uncle Lou and Harry have gone down to Aunt Marys to spend the evening there.

Sun 17 It cleared of beautiful. Catharine and I stayed home from church and the rest went. In the morning I wrote a letter to Eddie. We were playing for awhile before we got dinner. We went to Sunday school and when we came home we went down to Madelines and stayed till dark.

Mon 18 It has cleared of all right. We got up right early this morning. After breakfast we went over to town for some calico to make kitchen aprons. In the morning Papa went to Westminster and did not get back till after dinner. He brought the paint brushes Mama had left at Mrs Wilsons the other time the went down and he also bought Harry some drawing paper and a drawing book. Towards evening we went down to Madelines and there was a man that had chairs to sell and we bought three rocking chairs two armrockers and one without arms for sewing and they are nice and comfortable. Then Madeline, Catharine and I went up to the wagon shed and played Hyspie and had a good time then Mama called us and we had to go. Becky Tagge came over and sewed the whole afternoon for Mama.

Tues 19 It is raining this morning and it rained all day Becky Tagge came over in the morning and stayed all day. She made two gingham aprons and she

Tues 19 made the skirts to our dresses except gathering them. Mr. Sleagel and Edgar came here and stayed here for dinner. In the afternoon I made half of one of my kitchen aprons. Uncle Lou is carving a picture frame. He made the design himself. We had an early supper. I am making a waiter napkin. I have it nearly done. I am going to work at it tonight. Harry is drawing.

Wed 20 It is cloudy still. Becky Tagge is here and she stayed all day. She made each of us a dress and the day before she made us some aprons. Papa got a barrel of coal oil and we began using it this evening. I gathered both of our dress skirts. I have one of my waiter napkins and I think I can finish the other one soon. In the evening Catharine and I went over to Aunt Marys to call Papa and then we went up to Madelines to see the new paper. They have four rooms papered. Uncle Lou and Harry went over to the Methodist church to preaching.

Thurs 21 It is cloudy still. I practiced awhile in the morning and then went and sewed a little on the machine. Bessie has been in Pittsburgh six weeks today but she is coming home soon. Papa went to Mr. Abs Koontzs sale and was not home for dinner. Harry was at a sale too and was not home for dinner neither. Uncle Lou gave us each a stick of candy. Papa

bought a pound of taffy at the sale. I darned almost a pair of my stockings. Catharine and I got supper and washed up the dishes. I am going to read Helen=s Babies to Harry and Catharine..

Fri 22 It has cleared off nice and I hope that it will stay so. After breakfast I was practicing and then I read the papers. I did my work up stairs and then sewed at my apron and finished it in the evening. In the afternoon we went up to Madelines and had a good time. After supper I made a button hole and sewed on a button. Then I darned my stockings and prickled out the fringe of another waiter napkin.

Sat 23 It is is [sic] clear still. We were busy all morning cleaning up. Mamma said we might go to Hanover with Uncle Lou and in the afternoon we went and got up about half past four. We went around by Littlestown and in the town the roads were awful mudy [sic]. In the evening we all went over to Cousin Lizzie Youngs and played cards all evening.

Sun 24 It is a beautiful day. In the morning we went to church and there was a new minister there and preached a sermon. The subject was the church and it was a very good sermon.

After dinner we went to Sunday School and after Sunday School Amy Wirt, Mary Bollinger, Catharine and I walked out to Plum Creek and while we were going out we met Gerty Hostetter coming home and we asked her to walk along with us to the Plumy and she did and we had a good time. After supper they all went to church except Ed, Catharine and I and after they had gone Ed Eckert came over and brought Elizabeth along with him and we had a pleasant evening together. We stayed up late and talked.

Mon 25 It is not very clear but it did not rain. We came home by the ridge road and we came home in two hours ten to twelve in the morning. I washed up the dinner dishes. After dinner I finished pulling out my waiter napkin and then went up to Madelines but she was not home. We played till it was time to get supper. After supper I was studying some Sunday School lessons.

Tues 26 It is a beautiful day. After the breakfast dishes were washed I worked a long row of my waiter napkin and then went out to play. After dinner I got the headache real bad. Catharine went over to Madelines and Madeline and Catharine played up in the wagon shed all afternoon. My headache was not so bad in the evening.

Wed. 27 It is not very clear and we had a rain storm in the evening. We made our bed before we came down to breakfast. I have got a boyl on my right arm and it is very uncomfortable. Catharine and I were dragging dead brush all morning for to burn on a brush pile. After dinner Mama and Papa went to Westminster and while they were gone Christopher Moss came down and stayed awhile. At halfpast three we went up at the wagon shed and then Madelines and little Helen came over and we had a jolly time. In the evening we play cards all evening.

Thur 28 It was cloudy but it cleared away all nice till evening. We got a letter from Bessie saying that she would come home and Uncle Lou went up to Hanover and they got here at nine oclock in the evening. Becky Tagge came over in the morning and stayed all day. She made us each two white petticoats with [b?]ands to them. I worked awhile at my waiter napkin and then read the papers. After dinner we went over to town with Madeline and had a good time and when we came home they were eating supper.

Fri 29 It is pleasant outside. Harry went up to Littlestown for Bessy trunk and got home before dinner. Bessy brought us each something from Pittsburgh. She got Harry a baseball and Uncle Lou a box of candy. Catharine and I a book

together and a little bath tub. After dinner Catharine and I hitched rex and fido in Harrys little cart and they pulled it nicely. In the afternoon we were playing ball awhile. After supper I worked at my waiter napkin.

Sat 30 It was a little cloudy this morning. I helped Mama at the dishes while Catharine and Bessy cleaned up the rooms. After the dishes were washed I cleaned the little onions for to plant and Papa let me sell two quarts and a half. After we were washed and dressed we went up to Aunt Helens to sell my onions. After supper we played cards till it was time to go to bed.

Sun 31 It was raining when we got up but it stoped soon but it did not clear off. I read nearly all morning and after dinner we went to Sunday School and after we came home we went over to Madelines and stayed till supper time. I got a book from Mary Noss call Little Women by Louisa M. Alcott and I like it very much. After supper I read.

April 1889

Mon 1 It is cloudy this morning and raining in the afternoon. In the morning I got up and helped Papa to plant onions but could not finish before breakfast. After breakfast I read

Little Women and I think is splendid. I read nearly all afternoon and in the evening Cousin Connie Cousin Frank and Cousin Mollie. [sic] I finished hemstitching my waiter napkin this evening.

Tues 2 It is cloudy but it has cleared off real nice. Cleaned out the little hog pen to keep the little chickens in. After dinner Madeline came down and we played ball and had a good time and then we played Hyspi till supper time. After supper we sang and then I read.

Weds 3 It is not cloudy nor clear but it is pleasant. We helped Harry to tear down the partition in Bessy room and then helped John to carry down plaster but we soon stoped and washed ourselfs we were so dirty from the dust. After dinner I did nothing much but read and run about doing nothing. We got an early supper and after the dishes were washed Uncle Lou and the rest of us played ball till we could not see any more then we went in and Uncle Lou and I were working on a puzzle in the St Nicholas. We went to bed right early.

Thurs 4 It is cloudy still and real cold. We got up right early and after the dishes were washed I read the story in the London Illustrated news and then did the work upstairs. After dinner I pulled the fringe out of two sides of my waiter napkin and then I got Uncle Lou to get some stickes

to play ball with and then we all went and played. While we were playing Madeline and little Helen came down and then we played Hyspi. After supper I pulled out the rest of my waiter napkin and worked some at my pillow case.

Fri 5 It was cloudy in the morning but it cleared off. I did not do any thing especially in the morning. In the after noon we went over to Madelines and stayed until six oclock. Papa started a bonfire in the evening. After supper I painted awhile.

Sat 6 It has snowed and rained all day but the snow did not come to any thing. I did not do much in the morning help at the dishes. After diner we painted awhile and then washed and dressed. Then I darned some stockings and after supper we played cards and then worked my initials on my stockings.

Sun 7 It is clear and real cold. I was the first one down stairs. After the dishes were washed Catharine and I painted all morning. Cousin Keiser and Cousin Herbert and Hilda and Joseph came up and while there were here Cousin Kate, Miss Mabel, Mr. Alfred - George and Mr Harry Shriver came down from Hanover and stayed for dinner and supper. While we were washing

the dishes they played pig ball and then went and talked. After supper they went home. I read awhile in the evening.

Mon. 8 It is a beautiful day but cool. Anna Dutro is washing and Mr Lippi has come to plaster some of Bessys room and the porch. After dinner I took my red dress over to Tagges to get made over and then went over to Madelines and had a good time. After supper doing a little of everything.

Tues 9 It is beautiful. After breakfast I was hemstitching a ruffle for a pillow case and then went over to the farm for some cream. After dinner we went over to town to buy some candy. Papa and Uncle Lou went to Westminster and Uncle Lou got me a large gum ball it was not a solid one. After we came home from town we went up to the wagon shed and then we saw Madeline and she came over and then we played awhile. Then we saw Aust Groft in the cart and we got in the cart with him, he went up to get some and we drove up and back. After supper we were playing cards with Uncle Lou and Harry. We played Pedro. I was working a little at that ruffle of Bessys but not very long.

Wed 10 It is beautiful day. As soon as I was done my breakfast I went over to town for the mail. After I came awhile I sent over again with some letters. After dinner I was sewing and then I was fishing but I did not catch any fish. After supper I was sewing a little.

Thur 11 It is beautiful but it it was a slight in the evening. [sic] It is Bessys birthday and she is 20 years old. Bessy and Mamma went to Westminster in the morning and after they had gone we did and the work we had to do and then we hulled some dried beans. Mama bought us each a pink gingham dress. After dinner Bessy and Catharine and I went over to town and stayed till real late we called on Mrs May Yingling and Miss Celia. After supper I was sewing and doing other little things.

Fri 12 It is cloudy still but it cleared off in the evening. We did all the work we had to do and then I was fishing but not catch anything. After dinner I was sewing a while and then I was reading a while. There was a slight shower in the afternoon. After supper Bessy and Uncle Louis went to Pipe creek. In the evening Mamma was reading Sara Cr..oe [Crusoe?]. I was sewing a while after supper.

Sat 13 It is cloudy but it cleared of [sic] real nice in the evening. I was fishing a good deal in the morning and only caught one little fish. Catharine caught one larger than mine and I put them both in the ice pond. After dinner we went fishing again but did not catch any thing. We washed and dressed ourselfs and then helped to get supper. After supper went over to town to ask Anna Dutro to see if she could come over and work for us. I was playing cards byself awhile and then did read awhile.

Sun 14 It is clear still but it is not very warm. Everybody went to church except Catharine and I. After we were done the work up stairs I wrote a letter to Ed and sent it with Uncle Louis basket. about halfpast eleven I got dinner. After dinner went to Sunday School at halfpast two and I do not like it one bit. After Sunday School we went over to Madelines and we were playing awhile when the big people went up in the woods and then we went to [sic] and Madeline got some moss. We went to bed as soon as we were done supper.

Mon 15 It is still clear. The painters are here painting the house. Anna Dutro is here white washing. In the morning I went over to Tagges with

Bessy and was there nearly all morning. After dinner I did not do much at all but run around. After supper I was reading a little.

Tues 16 It is cloudy and did not clear off all day. The painters are here again. I whitewashed all day till about three oclock. After dinner Mr Haller + Matthews the papers came and papered Bessys room and it looks very nice. Uncle Lou went to Baltimore in the afternoon and I do not know when he will get back. After supper we were singing and then I was reading.

Wed 17 It is cloudy still and it was drizzling a little the best part of the day. The painters are here again. I did not do any thing all day but play. In the evening I was sewing a little.

Thur 18 It is was cloudy in the morning but it cleared off in the afternoon. When Uncle Lou went to Baltimore on Tues 16 he got Bessy a dozen of after dinner coffee spoons and he got himself a silver tea strainer for to give Cousin Connie on her wedding. In the morning I was sewing awhile. In the evening we were singing Razzle Dazzle and was playing cards with Harry and the rest. Harry is not very well.

April 1889

Fri 19 It is a beautiful day and it is Good Friday. I did not do anything but my usul [sic] work and run around in the morning and in the afternoon Maining [?] and Papa went to Westminster. I was reading nearly all the afternoon. Went to bed early.

Sat 20 It was clear in the morning but in the afternoon it cloudey [sic] up and we had a thunder gust. I did not do much in the morning. In the afternoon Mamma and I papered the clothes room. Bessy and Uncle Lou went to Hanover. In the evening Mamma played cards with us awhile.

Sun 21 It is Easter morning and a beautiful day. We had no church or Sunday School. Catharine and I were fishing in the morning. We went over to Madelines before dinner. After dinner Catharine went over to the farm with Papa and Mamma and I went over to Madeline. After supper we went to bed early.

Mon 22 It is clear still and real cool. After breakfast dishes we washed I helped Mamma to paper a closet in Bessys room. Afterwards went fishing but did not catch anything. Bessy and Uncle Lou came from Hanover in time for dinner. After dinner Bessy went up

stairs to fix up her room. Madeline and Little Helen came over and we played Hyspie. After supper we were singing and I was sewing.

Tues 25 It is a beautiful day. We brought two dozen bannannas from Mr Six. Catharine and I bulled out the tacks in the carpet and matting of the spare room and mamma cleaned it up after dinner. Papa is building a new wharf [?] and he got it finished and it is a very nice one. After dinner we were fixing the matting. After supper were doing what we wanted to do I mean what I said in the day before.

Wed 24 It is not very clear but it cleared up real nice in the evening. Anna Dutro came over and we whitewashed all morning and then had to stop for the lime did not hold out. Bessie and Uncle Lou went to Cousin Connies wedding and Uncle Lou went up in the woods and got a basket of trailing Arbutus for Bessy. She wore her black silk and she looked very nice. We cleaned up Harrys room and put matting in the clothes room. Bessy and Uncle Lou came home from Cousin Connies wedding about half past nine and Bessy brought some flowers along but they were pretty well withered.

Thur 25 It is raining hard and did not stop all day. Anna Dutro is here cleaning up house. I did not do any thing of any account this morning

and after dinner I was helping a little but I was reading nearly all the time. I went to bed almost most [sic] as I had got done the dishes.

Fri 26 It is raining hard and has done so all day and is ugly and cold. We were playing nearly all morning with our dolls and I made a dress for my darkey. After dinner I was reading and not doing much of any thing. After supper Uncle Lou promised to play cards with us but I do not know whether he will.

Sat 27 It is raining still but it stopped in the evening and I think it will clear off. Bessy and I cleaned up the room and library this morning and in the afternoon they all went to church except Catharine and myself. We played with out dolls till it was time to wash and dress. After supper Papa played Euchre with us awhile. I was reading and not doing much of any thing till it was time to go to bed.

Sat 28 [sic] It is cloudy still and raining. We have Communion and everybody went to church except Catharine and myself. We staid [sic] home and played with our dolls and we made a little tea party

for them and then we got some cream and made some butter with two little churns Bessy had bought us long ago. After dinner we went up in the boat to Susan Bankerts to see her fox. We went over to Madelines after we came back and while we were playing the big people went boat riding and after we came home from our ride we stayed home. We went to bed early.

Mon 29 It was real clear and real warm. Papa and Bessy went to Westminster this morning. After dinner we were play [sic] down at Stonesifers when mamma told us to go to the farm for the butter. After supper we were singing and then I went to bed.

Tues 30 It is not clear. After breakfast Mamma Papa and Uncle Lou went to church. Catharine and my self gathered a can full of kale and after dinner we papered the Water closet and it looks real nice. After supper we were rolling our hoops on the pike and then Madeline call [sic] us and wanted us to come up and see the rabbits and they are awful nice. She gave me a duet to learn. I practiced it awhile and then went to bed.

May 1889

Wed 1 It is cloudy but cleared off in the evening. I swept out the dining room and then was helping Bessy awhile. Mrs Leeagle and Mrs Keppler was here for dinner. The set of Haviland china we sent for came and it is real nice. Two young ladies came up from Westminster to see Bessy. We went up to Madelines this afternoon and stayed till su0pper time. After supper we were singing and I was reading.

Thur 2 It is beautiful and clear but it clouded up in the evening. Anna Dutro is here to do the work in the kitchen as we expect company. I was washing some window glass for the hot bed and after I was through I dressed my self. Dr. Russell and his wife and Miss Leslie [?] Walters his wifes sister they came and spent the day and we had a nice time. Bessy went along back with them and I do not know how long she will stay. They went soon after supper. We went to bed early.

Fri 3 It was cold and cloudy all day. We washed up the dishes and then we were playing marbles with Stonesifers. Mr Haller [?] and Matthews came before dinner to paper Uncle Lous hall and they were here for dinner. I was playing nearly all after

noon. After supper I was practicing and reading a little.

Sat 4 It is nice and clear. We were not very busy in the morning. After dinner Uncle Henery [sic] came and stayed till Monday. After supper Cousin Jim, Cousin Frank and Cousin Kie came over and they played six handed euchre till eleven oclock.

Sun 5 It is a beautiful day. We have no church. We did not do much in the morning. After dinner went up in the boat and we made some whistles and after we came home we went over to Madelines and came home at five oclock. After supper went over to the Oaks with Aunt Margs folks and did not get back till dark.

Mon 6 It is beautiful and clear. We did not do much in the morning except our usual work and after dinner Mamma and Papa went to Westminster. Went over to the farm for the butter and they are putting a new roof on the house. We got supper before they came home and after Uncle Lou and we were playing cards.

Tues 7 It is clear still and hot. We did not do much in the morning and while we were eating diner Dr. Russell brought Bessy

home. After dinner Dr. Russell and Harry went fishing and stayed all after noon. Cousin Nettie [Nuttie?] Shriver of Cumberland and cousin Olivia Shriver came up from Aunt Marys and we went boating. After supper we went up to Madelines.

Wed 8 It is clear still. Anna Dutro came and finished the whitewashing. We did not do much in the morning of any account. After the dinner dishes were washed darned my stockings and then went over to town for Papa for a box of cartridges and after I came back I wrote a little note to Mrs Russell and put it in Bessys letter. After supper [sic]

Thur 9 It is clear and hot outside. Anna Dutro is here helping to clean up the kitchen. Did not do much in the morning except to help a little but we washed up the dinner dishes Mama washed them. After dinner we ran bare footed till five oclock and we were wading nearly all the time. After supper Uncle Lou went up to Cousin Helens and got Miss Florence and Madeline to come and go boating and went along too and after we came home we went straight to bed.

Fri 10 It is clear and hot. We got up at

six oclock. Anna Dutro is here cleaning up the dining room. We washed up the breakfast dishes and the I was reading the papers. I began cleaning out the sewing room so we could clean it up and we cleaned it up after dinner. We were running barefooted nearly all day. About five oclock storm came up and it blue the dirt in every direction and there was some ugly flashes of lighting [sic] and the papers said there was a cyclone in Hanover but I guess it was not so bad as they said. We went to bed early.

Sat 11 It was cloud [sic] in the morning but cleared off in the evening. I did not do much in the morning. After dinner we washed and dressed ourselves early and went over to Aunt Marys but Madeline was not home and we came home at six oclock. After supper I was playing Bessys accompaniment on the piano and then was playing cards.

Sun 12 It is clear outside. We have no church. After the breakfast dishes were washed Uncle Lou and Bessy and I myself were playing together. Uncle Lou and Bessy on there violins and I on the piano. I was skating awhile on my roller skates and then we were walking around the house to see who could beat I did. After dinner we went to

Sunday School and after we came home Madeline came over and we went up to horse shoe bend and after we came home we were playing still pound and then we were running around and playing a little of every thing. After supper we did not do much.

Mon 13 It is cloudy and has been so all day. As soon as the breakfast dishes were washed I wipped lace half way around a pillow and then went over to town. After dinner I was sewing again and then I was helping to do some other sewing. Then I brought my play things out on the balcony and after supper we went over to Taggs with Bessy and after we came home I finished that pillow case and then went to bed.

Tues 14 It was clear and cloudy all day and in the night before there was a dreadful hard thunder storm. I was sewing a little for Bessie and then I was making tufts for a comfort and after dinner Mama Catharine and myself got at it and then we finished it after supper all but the edging. There was a light shower in the afternoon but we did not get much

but rain. We went to bed early.

Wed 15 The weather is clear and has been so all day. I was sewing awhile for my doll baby and then went over to town. After dinner Uncle Lou and Bessy went to Littlestown and did not get back till supper time. I made two little dresses one white and one pink. Madeline came over and then we practices awhile and then we were playing. Before supper we went up to Madelines to see the young bunnies and they are awful little. I went to bed early.

Thur 16 The weather is fine and was so all day. We got up right early. Papa got a lot of bark in today. I folded the clothes and then before dinner I took some letters over to the P.O. I wrote a postal to Ed asking him to come down soon but I do not know whether he will. After dinner I was helping Mama to fix some curtains and then cleaned out the boat and it was a job. I then helped to get supper. Miss Florence and Mr Jim McSherry came over We went up to Madelines and stayed till nine oclock.

Fri 17 The weather is fine. I tent over for the mail and after I came home I swept out my room and then went over again.

We ran barefooted. After dinner I swept out the dining room and then we were playing all after noon. After we were playing cards Catharine and I.

Sat 18 The weather is fine. Anna Dutro is here helping. About nine oclock Bessy and Catharine went to Westminster and I help mama to get done. After dinner we washed our hair and then washed and dressed and about half past three Dr and Mrs Russell and Mr Clarence Denison came down from Hanover. After supper Mr Denison, Bessy, Miss Florence and Uncle Lou went up in the boat and after they came home they went over to Aunt Marys. While they were gone Dr and Papa played chess and Mrs Russell played cards with us and Mamma read and Harry looked on.

Sun 19 The weather is cloudy and and [sic] it kind of drizzeled all morning. We were fishing nearly all morning and we caught five splendid fish. I caught a turtle and that I killed but we put the fish in the pond. After dinner we were telling each others ages and then Mr Denison and Dr were fishing and Mr Denison caught a little falls fish and a big sucer [sic]

then Bessy took him riding. Madeline came over and we played still pond [sic] and while we were playing they came home and then we asked Bessy to take us a short ride and she took us to the factory and back. Miss Kitty Roberts and Mr John Cunningham came up but did not stay for supper. After supper we did not do much but talk.

Mon 20 It is cloudy and been raining at times all day along two and three oclock it began raining and rained hard. Dr and Mrs Russell and Mr Denison went home in the morning. We were weeding the flower beds and as it began to rain we stoped. After the dinner dishes were washed I started to weed the little onion bed but it began to rain to hard so I stoped. After it had stoped raining we saw one of the millers pulling at a post at the side in the sawmill and then we went down to see it and after a little while the roof fell with a crash. After supper Cousin Mollie, Cousin Will and Cousin Jim came over and we played six handed euchre till it was time to go to bed.

nice in the evening. Conrad Rusher the miller was working at the saw mill all day tearing it to pieces. I did not do anything all day except run around. In the evening Pappa and Mama went down to Aunt Marys.

Wed 22 It is cloudy and rained in the after noon. Bessy and I went over for the mail and then I went over for the down mail. I did not do any thing except what I had to do and that was not much. We went to bed early.

Thur 23 The weather was clear and cloudy and is dreadful cold. We had to have fire in the front room. We did do nothing but lay around all day. After supper Uncle Lou, Harry, Catharine and my self were playing Anigrams till it was time to go to bed.

Fri 24 It has been clear and cloudy all day and rained a few drops. Bessy Catharine and I went over for the mail. Catharine and I were playing Anigrams awhile and then we had to get dinner. After dinner we were running around. We did not do much in the evening.

Sat 25 It has been clear and cloudy all day. We went for the mail. I did not do much but my usual work and after

dinner went over to town and after we came home we washed and dressed our selves. After supper we went up to Madelines and staid till dark and then came home. Mama and Papa were down at Aunt Marys. After we came home w3e staid up a while and then went to bed.

Sun 26 It is raining and it rained nearly all day. Towards evening it cleared off nice. We did not do anything all morning. After dinner we went up to Madelines and staid till supper time. We went to bed almost directly after supper.

Mon 27 It is cloudy and raining. We did not do much all day. We went to bed early.

Tues 28 The weather is beautiful. In the morning Uncle Lou printed some cards to play anigrams with and we helped him. We did nothing but play all afternoon. We did not do anything all evening.

Wed 27 The weather was clear all day. After dinner Mamma and Bessy went to Westminster and then Catharine and [I] played all after noon and had a jolly time. After supper we went over to town and did not get back till dark.

Thur 30 To day is Ascension day and it is cloudy and it rained towards evening. We went down too [sic] Aunt Marys and after dinner went down but I came home early. I went down for Catharine as she staid to long. Uncle Lou was playing Anigrams with us awhile. After supper we played going up street.

Fri 31 The weather is cloudy and it rained hard all day. I started a blouse for my boy doll and got it nearly done. I helped to get dinner as Mamma had the headache. The water was high and there was a terrible flood at Johnstown Pa.

Sat 1 It is clear and was clear all day. We did not do much in the morning. After dinner when we were washed and dressed we went up to Madelines. We sat around in the evening.

Sun 2 It is clear and Bessy and Uncle Lou went to Hanover. After dinner we went up to Madelines and staid till supper time. I went to bed early.

Mon 3 It is clear but rained in the night. We did not do anything of any account all day.

Tues 4 It is clear and staid so all day only there was a little storm in the evening. Papa and Harry went to Westminster and got matting for the front room and all of us cleaned up the room and library and and [sic] got them finish except fixing the library. Mr Denison sent Bessie and Harry some books Bessy four and Harry two. I read in the evening.

Wed 5 The weather was clear all day and cold. Mamma stained the library in the morning and in the afternoon I helped her to do the steps and hall. I am reading a novel of Bessy called Miss Lou by Edward P. Roe. About four o'clock Madeline came over and we went over to town. After supper supper [sic] Mamma and I arranged the books on the bookshelf in the library and when we got done I read till it was time to go to bed.

Thur 6 The weather is clear and cold. I was reading Miss Lou nearly all the morning. After dinner we went over to town. We did not do much in the evening.

Fri 7 It is clear and real warm. I practised an hour and then went to potato buys with Catharine. After dinner Miss

Florence Selby Madelines governess and Bessy went up to Littlestown. After dinner Catharine and I went up to Madelines and asked her to come down and she came and then we went over to spoon hill and picked a lot of wild strawberrys and after we came home I made some lemonade and the girls nibled the berrys and we had a little party. We had cantaloupe pickle cake bread and butter onions leminade and strawberry. After we had every thing put away we played till it was time to get supper.

Sat 8 The weather is clear and was clear all day. I wrote a letter to Amy Wirt in the morning and and [sic] it and three others over to the post office. After dinner we washed and dressed and then went over to Aunt Marys and staid till five oclock. Cousin Carley and Cousin Hattie his wife and little Margaret his little child from Boston spent Sunday at Aunt Marys. In the evening after supper Miss Florence came over and we took a boat ride. We had a lovely ride as the moon was up.

Sun 9 The weather was clear but in the afternoon it looked rather threatening but it didn't rain. We had church and Sunday School. In the morning after they had gone to church I put on my slippers and wrapper and read. After dinner we went to Sunday school and after we came home we went over to aunt Marys. I wore my white dress and Catharine her Shally. We went to bed early.

Mon 10 The weather was kind of clear all day but in the afternoon it looked rather threatening but it rained towards morning. I did not do much in the morning. After dinner went over for the butter. After supper we dressed and went up to Cousin Helens to see Miss Florence's mother and she is real nice.

Tues 11 The weather is real clear but it looked like it would be a storm in the after noon but it was not. Cousin Gorgee [sic] came here in the morning on his Bicycles and stayed till after dinner. I read Captain Kidds Gold a book belonging to Harry through. Went to bed early.

Wed 12 It is cloudy and staid cloudy all day. I went to Westminster in the afternoon with Uncle Lou and we did not get home till late.

I had to teeth filled with silver and I bought four handkerchiefs, two tooth brushes and one comb and a bottle of Cachons. Uncle Lou bought a new hammock. We went to bed early.

Thurs 13 The weather was kind of clear all day. Mr Denison came down from Hanover on his bicycles. We did not do much all day. In the after noon went up to Madelines to a little party. After supper went over to Aunt Marys and staid till nearly twelve oclock.

Fri 14 It was real clear all day. In the morning we went fishing up in the boat but did not catch any thing. Harry went to Hanover on Thursday morning. After supper Miss Selby, Miss Florence, and Uncle Frank came over and played cards and sang.

Sat 15 It is not very clear and there was a gust in the after noon. We were fishing nearly all day. After supper we were playing duets Uncle Lou and I on the old piano then they went up to cousin Helens.

Sun 16 It is a beautiful day and was clear all the time. In the morning we went up in the boat and staid along time. After dinner Clarence and Harry

went for strawberrys but they couldn't find any so they went after cherries. Catharine followed them but when she got there she could not find them and then she tried to find strawberrys but she did not find any. After while I went over and I found her but not the others so we called and then they answered us and then we knew where they were. As we were going in to supper Mrs Selby and Miss Florence came over and after we were done supper they went up in the boat.

Mon 17 The weather was clear nearly all day but there was a hard rain towards evening. I got a letter from Aimie Wirt and wrote one to Mary Bollinger. Towards dinner Clarence, Papa, Catharine and I were playing cards. Clarence and I were partners and Catharine and Papa. Papa and Catharine beat. After dinner we were playing again but they beat us. Bessy went to Hanover in the afternoon. Harry took her to Littlestown and Clarence went along with them on his bicycles. I did not do

much all day as I had the headache. We went to bed right early.

Tues 18 It was real clear. We did not do much all day. About when we were getting up from the dinner table to fellows one with a fife and a bagpipe [came]. We were playing marbles awhile. We went to bed early.

Wed 19 It was real clear all day. We got the kitchen painted and ate supper on the porch. We played marbles when ever we got a chance. I mended a shirt of Harrys and went over to town.

Thur 20 It is clear and warm. We worked hard all day. I made bread all by my self as Mama had the headache and it got good. We went to bed early.

Fri 21 It was clear all day but there was a slight shower in the evening. We are ironing. As soon as we got the dinner dishes washed we helped Anna to iron. Catharine and I got the dinner. We had peas, potatoes, scalded lettuce and boiled ham.

Mr. Sleagle for dinner. [sic] Mama did not come down for breakfast and after we were done our breakfast Catharine toasted a piece of bread and I made some tea and took it up and she ate it all. She came down before dinner. We went to bed early.

Sat 22 It is clear and cool. Papa and I mowed the best part of the lawn in the morning and after we were done I mowed a piece myself. I helped Catharine scrub the back porch. In the evening Uncle Lou treated us to ice cream and after we came home we stoped in at Marys, Cousin Bessy Myer, Cousin Lum, and Cousin Cora and Cousin Marls wife and family.

Sun 23 It is clear and real cool. We have no church but we have Sunday School. We went down to Aunt Marys before dinner. After dinner we went to Sunday School and when we came home we put on our other dresses and went down to Aunt Marys. They came up and we took a boat ride. I played a little on the

piano before I went to bed. Miss Florence gave me a book called Every girls annual and I am reading it.

Mon 24 It is clear and cloudy and real cool. We played marbles when ever we got the chance and I read when ever I got the time. Lucretia Tagg is making us each a gingham dress. We went over after super to try; them on and went to bed when we got home.

Tues 25 It is cloudy. We did our usual mornings work. After dinner we went over to Taggs. We did not do much the rest of the day.

Wed 26 It is clear and hot. We were running bare footed almost all day. We ironed half of the ironing in the morning. We went over to Taggs to get our dresses.; They were done. In the evening we went up to Cousin Helens as they had a school commencement on a small scale, but it was very nice.

Thurs 27 It is clear today and hot. We were running bare footed all day. We ironed the starched clothes in the morning and that finished the wash. We went over in

the harvest field a while in the morning. About three oclock in the after noon Madeline came over and we went wading. After we came home we took some supper over to Harry. In the evening went over to town and we stopped in at Madelines awhile.

Fri 28 It is a clear day but not very warm. We cleaned up mamas, our own and Harrys in the morning. After dinner, Mrs Mary Boyle and Mr. Jim McSherry and Cousin Bessy Myer came over to see mama and Madeline came along with them. After Uncle Lou came home from the harvest field he told me if they wanted to go boating I should go and tell them. I did and all of them came. In the evening it looked as if we might have a gust but we did not.

Sat 29 It is clear and real warm. We washed a few of Bessy's dirty clothes and mamma ironed them. In the after noon we picked a few mulberrys and then went over to the farm. After we came home we washed and

dressed and then got an early supper. After supper Uncle Lou took us to Hanover. We got there at half past eight and no body was there but Uncle Dave and Aunt Eliza.

Sun 30 It is a cloudy day but did not rain any till evening. Cousin Anna Renshaw has been staying with Aunt Eliza a couple of weeks and we saw her on Sunday and I like her very much. She sang in church in the morning. In the afternoon Aimie Wirt, Mary Bollinger and Lizzie Forney came down and we got Ed and then walked out to Plum Creek. We came home after an early supper. It rained after we got home.

July 1889

Mon 1 It was cloudy all day and rained off and on. Anna Dutro is washing. We did not do much all day. In the afternoon we picked raspberries and preserved them. Harry and Uncle Lou went to the circus in Westminster. After supper we went to bed early.

Tues 2 It is cloudy all day and rained hard almost all day. We ironed a few of the things in the morning. After dinner I finished my boy dolls blouse and it is real cute. There was a Thunder gust here this evening and rained very hard. I was sewing a little in the evening.

Wed 3 It is still cloudy but in the after noon it looked like it might clear. I hope it will. We finished ironing in the morning and we had hard clothes. After dinner Catharine and I picked raspberries. We did not do much in the evening.

Thurs 4 It was cloudy in the morning and there was a light rain in the morning. Today is the Fourth of July and it is the dryest fourth we had yet. We one shooting cracker. [sic] In the afternoon we were darning stockings awhile and then went up to Madelines to look at the selfbinders cutting wheat. After supper Uncle Lou said that he must go over to town awhile and when he came home he had a lot of fire works . He shot them off after dark and they were real nice.

Fri 5    It is beautiful and clear. I went over to town as soon as we had the dishes washed and when I came home I swept the front porch and pavement and then helped to pick raspberries. As soon as I was done my dinner I went up and cleaned Bessy's room and it took me nearly two hours I think. We went up to the wagon shed and Madeline came over and we played and had lots of fun. After supper we did not do much.

Sat 6 It is clear and warm. Harry went to Littlestown for Bessy a little after ten oclock. I droped two rows and a half for Papa. Mamma and I got some ice and then I strang beens. After dinner Madeline came over and we went swimming and the water was real cold. After supper we walked over to town and got some caremels.

Sun 7 It is clear and hot. Catharine and I staid home from church. Tony and Madeline came and went wading but we did not. After we came home from

Sunday School went on to Madelines and staid till six oclock. After supper we went to bed early.

Mon 8 The weather is clear and warm. Sally Hafley is here and will stay till cousin Ana goes home I hope. Mr. Byers is here making a new pump platform for the front pump. I had nothing to do all morning but took some letters over to the post office. Bessy and Mama went up to Littlestown to bring them from the train and Ed came along and I was glad. We went up in the boat after supper and Madeline and cousin Sally came over and went along.

Tues 9 The weather is beautiful and hot. Pappa is threshing wheat. We we [sic] were over in the wheat field all day. Harry and Ed fixed up a kind of a bath house along the Hanover creek but I did not see it yet. Catharine and I dressed after supper but did not go any where.

Wed 10 The weather is still clear and awful hot. I darned some stockings in the morning. Papa is not done thrashing and

John Stansberry hauls the wheat over to the mill and one time we all went along, Cousin Aimie Cousins Kate, Ed, Bess, Catharine and I. When we came home we all went in wading but stayed in only a short time. After Cousin Kate Cousin Aimie, Catharine and I went up in the boat and Catharine and I went in bathing, but the rest didn’t. After supper we went up to Cousin Helens and Aimie Myer was down at Aunt Marys. Cousin Percy and Mr John Cunningham came up from Westminster and then we had to go home.

Thur 11 The weather is cloudy and there was a thunder gust in the after noon. I played backgammon with Ed when ever I got the chance. After dinner I went over to Blooms for some candy and when I came home Clarence Denison and Mr Soliday were there and stayed to supper and went home by moon light. After supper the girls came over and Pappa took us all up in the boat then Harry took them up again but

I did not go long. When they came back we had some fire works from the forth of July. We did not stay up till they went home.

Fri 12 The weather is clear. Ed and Harry went netting and caught three fish. The girls were over nearly all morning. I was laying down awhile after dinner. The girls came over and went up in the boat but did not ask us to go along but we did not want to. After supper went over to Aunt Marys then we played quaker meeting and then danced.

Sat 13 The weather was clear all day but in the after noon we had a thunder shower. We cleaned up stairs in the morning. While we were up stairs the girls came over and went up in the boat. I did not do much else in the morning. After dinner I went over in the hayfield but as it looked like rain I did not stay long. When I came home I took off my guimpe and wore the lower part of my dress. After supper the girls came over and we had a

little dance. We did not stay up till the girls went home for I got too sleepy.

Sun 14 The weather was clear all morning and all afternoon but began to rain at six and rained off and on all evening. Madeline and Nannie came over and went up in the boat. After dinner I did not do much but sit around and read. The girls went up in the boat and when they came home we sat and talked awhile. After supper we went over to Aunt Marys and had a good time but all we did was to sit and talk but we had fun any way.

Mon 15 It is clear and cloudy all day and has been real cold. After breakfast Harry and Mr Bankerts fishnet and we got that and then set it at the bridge and went up the creek a little way in the boat and then stirred down and we caught one fall fish. Then we got the ten pins and went down in the shop and played one game and then I went over to town for some candy. After dinner went for huckle-

berries and did not get home till nearly five oclock. We got five quarts. After supper Cousin Percy and Mr John Roberst [sic] came up and then we changed our dressed [sic]. Madeline and Anna [?] came over and we went down on the bridge and talked.

Tues 16 The weather is clear and cool. I began to iron as soon as I was done my breakfast. I did not iron very much for I had to make a huckleberry pudding. After dinner I waked over to Taggs for fun and when I came I was riding on the hay wagon. Then I was reading awhile. After supper we dressed and took a little walk and when we came back we stopped in at Aunt Marys and stayed till it was time to come home.

Wed 17 It is a clear day. Sally is ironing. I did not do much all morning but read. After dinner I was helping Mamma to clean chickens and while we were cleaning them Miss Kitty Roberts and her sister Nancy a Miss Smith and a Mr Shrob and they stayed

till ten or eleven oclock. After supper who should come driving up but Mr Soliday, Cousin Helen W. Miss Mabel Trowe [?] and Mr Bair. Then Mamma went and baked some sponge cake. Uncle Lou sent off some wheels and a colored light, the only one he had. We went to bed before they went home.

Thurs 18 The weather is beautiful and real hot. After breakfast Catharine and I went over to the farm for june apples and eggs. After we came home I washed a shirt for Ed. After dinner Annie and Madeline came over and we were cutting up and having a good time when we got to talking about going in bathing and finally we went and had a splendid time. After supper Madeline and Annie came over and the boys took us up in the boat and when we got back we sat on the bridge and talked till late.

Fri 19 The weather is cloudy and it rained hard in the after noon. We were helping John Berry to haul stray with old Frank and the spring wagon. Then I ironed Eddies shirt and then went over to the bath house and scrubbed it out and the boys came over and fixed up a plank to walk out to the water on. I fixed the bath house up after dinner. At noon I went over for eggs and I had to hurry home for I got caught in a rain. I then went down to the shop and watched the men playing pedro. After supper we went up to Madelines and had a good time.

Sat 20 It is clear and real hot. The girls came over and then we went over to the bath house and fixed it up nice and till we got home they were eating dinner. Along two and three

oclock Madeline and Anna came over and we got Bess to go with us and we went in bathing and had a splendid time. After supper we - I mean Katie, Cousin Anna, Catharine and I - we walked over to the end of stone bridge and till we got to the factory it began to rain. Catharine and I went home but others [sic] went in to Aunt Marys and then we took an umbrella and went up to Cousin Helens. We sat and talked awhile and then played blind man buff till it was time for us to come home.

Sun 21 It is a clear day and real hot. We all took a walk in the morning. After dinner went to Sunday School and then we went over to Aunt Marys and I played anigrams awhile. I stayed up at Cousin Helens for supper and enjoyed it very much. We did not do

Tues 23 The weather is clear and cool. Mr Jim and Cousin Albert Myer came up and we played base ball with dice. Then I went over to town with Anna. After dinner I read a story and then went with the others. After Cousin Gorge went home we went

Wed 24 The weather is clear and warm. Ed and Cousin Kate went home this morning. Before they went we found that the horse had a shoe off so Ed, Catharine, Harry, Anna and I all got in the buggy and rode over to the blacksmith shop and waited till Harvey had the shoe on. After dinner we went black berrying but did not get any. We did not do much the rest of the after noon. In the evening we went over to Aunt Marys and found that Annie was going. After dark we went up to Uncle Franks to see them playing whist.

Fri 26 The weather is cloudy and the air is damp and cold. I went over to town in the morning to get some groceries and got a box of hair pins. I went over in the afternoon about three oclock and when I came home I took a nap then I dressed my self. After supper we went over to Aunt Marys and we played Anigrams till Uncle Lou came over and told us to come home.

Sat 27 The weather is cloudy and rained in the morning. After the rain stopped I went over to town and there was to [sic] cents change left and Mamma said I could have it.

I did not do much the rest of the morning. After dinner Cousin Frank, Cousin Al and Mr Jim came over and played whist. Mr Jim had stayed here for dinner. We dressed early and before we got down Cousin Kate and Mr Uhler came. Uncle Lou took Mr Uhler in where they were playing cards and he sat down and played too. After while they went up in the boat and while they were gone Clarence Denison came and he walked up to meet them. After supper they sat and talked. We did not stay up very late.

Sun 28 The weather was cloudy in the morning but it cleared off some towards evening. We did not do much all morning but sit around and read. I started the Lost Key and red it through. After dinner Cousin Kate and Mr Uhler went home. Then we went over to Aunt Marys but as Madeline was asleep I came home and read. After supper Madeline came over and we walked over to meet Uncle Lou, Cousin Anna and Catharine who had gone on

before. They did not stay long after we came. When we came home we were swinging in the hammock then we went up on the porch and talked awhile and then went to bed.

Mon 29 The weather is cloudy but it cleared of real nice in the evening and there was a nice wind belowing [sic] all day. Clarence went home in the morning and we are left all alone again. I walked over to town with Cousin Anna. We were sitting on the porch when Madeline came down and told Mamma that there was a telephone call up there for her and while Mama went Madeline stayed and we played and then went up with her. I walked over to town with Madeline and when we came home I came right home. We went to bed early.

Tues 30 The weather is cloudy and began to rain a little while before dinner. Catharine and cousin Anna went over to the Post Office and got caught in the rain. I was busy swept the pavement, darned my stockings.

I did not do much after dinner but finish my stockings. In the evening I was playing solitare [sic]and then store with Catharine till we went to bed.

Wed 31 This is the last day in July and is a cloudy one and has rained nearly all day. I did nothing but darn stockings all morning. Of course I did not keep at it strate [sic] along. After dinner I did not do much else. I darned till there was no cotton left and then I ran around all the rest of the afternoon. Mr Jim stayed for super and after dark we went in and played two games of anigrams and then had a watermelon and then Catharine and I went to bed.

Thur 1 This is the first day of August and is a cloudy one and it rain off and on all day but it kind of cleared of in the afternoon. Did not do much all morning except take some letters over for

Cousin Anna. Uncle Cal sent mamma a box of pineapples yesterday and we put up preserved some on Wednesday and the rest today. Madeline came over and we were playing still pond then C and M played a game of checkers and I read then we dipped out the boat. After supper we went up and stayed till dusk.

Fri 2 The weather is clear. I went over to the farm in the morning and that’s all I did in the way of work. Madeline came over in the after noon and we were playing still pond and Hyspie. Bessie and Cousin Anna came home a little while before supper. There was thunder and lightening after we had got in bed but it did not amount to any thing.

Sat 3 It was clear nearly all day and in the after noon there was a hard short rain. After that it cleared off nice. I cleaned up my room and went over to the post office and Cousin Anna gave me two cents for going and now

Sun 4 The weather was clear in the morning but it got cloudy in the after noon. I read nearly all morning. We went to Sunday School after dinner. Sally did not come so we had to get supper and wash up the dishes. After the supper dishes were wash I was playing on the piano and then went to bed.

Mon 5 The weather is cloudy but cleared off in the afternoon. We had a thunder storm at two oclock last night. We (Catharine and I) went over for the mail then I was helping mamma to bake cakes and we were skating on rollers awhile in the morning. I did not eat hardly any dinner. I made a bustle for Bessie and then was reading. We drove up to Hanover after a

five oclock supper and got there before dark. As soon as we got there we went up to Aimie Wirts. Papa Uncle Lou were the only ones that did not go.

Tues 6 The weather was beautiful in the morning but ended up with rain in the afternoon. We all went to Pen mar [?] on an early train and when we got there Aunt Eliza Aunt Sarah Catharine Mamma and I all drove up to High rock and the Blue Mountain House. We got on the swings once and on the flying Horses three times. The musc [sic] was beautiful and so was the dancing and wed just had a glorious time. We came home early and I enjoyed the ride on the cars as much as anything.

Wed 7 The weather was cloudy in the morning but cleared of in the afternoon. I was down at the factory and then took a letter up to the post office and when

I came home I stopped in at Aimie Wirts and she invited for dinner. We stayed and had a very nice dinner with ice cream for dessert. As soon as we were done dinner we went back and played tennis. I was playing awhile and can play right well for a begginner. We came home at two oclock. After supper we all went up in the boat.

Thru 8 The weather is clear and warm. Today is my birthday and I am fourteen years old. I wrote a letter to Aimie Wirt and when Cousin Anna took her letter over I went along. After dinner I went over for the down mail but did not get anything. Mr Jim and Cousin Helen cut all the bushes out of the race and now it is nice to go up in the boat. After tea Catharine and I went up to the dam in the boat and when we came home went over to town with Uncle Lou. When we came home from town went in at Aunt Marys and stayed awhile

Fri 9 The weather was cloudy. I did not do much in the morning. After dinner Catharine went up to Madelines but as I had a headache I did not go. After while they came down for me and then I went up with them awhile. We went to bed early.

Sat 10 The weather is clear. Mr Jim and Uncle Lou were playing chess. Catharine and I cleaned up the part of the balcony where we kept our dolls. After dinner we went up to the dam and went in wading. After supper we took a walk and then went over to Aunt Marys.

Sun 11 The weather is clear. In the morning we went down to Nelson Koontz saw mill to see a dunkard dip a man that was to be a dunkard and we were over there all morning. Cousin Anna and Cousin Helen and Uncle Lou went before and heard the preaching but we didn’t. Mr George, Mr Harry Shriver, Miss Mabel Trowe and Cousin Kate came just before we started and then then [sic] they went along. After dinner

Mon 12 The weather is beautiful and there was a delightful cool air all day. We were up with our dolls all morning almost sewing and playing. After dinner we got Bessys baby carriage down and went up in the orchard and got some peaches and then went up in the woods where they were cutting down trees. The woods belong to Papa. After supper we took a walk and when we were coming home we met Uncle Lou, Mr Howard Bair and Mr Dellone.

Tues 13 The weather is clear. I was working around at different thing all morning. I finished a dolls petticoat I had started yesterday then I took my babys out riding and then went and hunted for Catharines doll cap she had lost and found it. I was watching Papa and Mr Jim play one game of chess

then went up and dressed. After tea we went up on the balcony and played with blocks.

Wed 14 The weather was cloudy in the morning but cleared off in the afternoon but about six oclock we had the heavyest gust we had this summer. It rained two inches and there was tow or three awful claps of thunder and hard strokes of lighting. One stuck in John Stonesburys [?] house but it did not do much damage. I did not do much this morning. After dinner Cousin Helen and Bessy went to Westminster. Cousin Kate and Mr Soliday came down and then Papa went up and telephoned for them to come home. It was a good thing they came when they did or else they would of got in the storm. After tea Mr Soliday played a game of chess but he had never played a game of chess before so I had to tell him every move and so he beat. Papa had went up to Cousin Helens to try and get a telegram off to Hanover to tell them that they would

not come that night but he couldn't so they went but not till late. Bess and Cousin Anna went along with them. Cousin Helen and I slept together.

Thur 15 The weather is very on certain [sic] as there was real heavy clouds sailing but I don’t think it will rain. Uncle Lou took Cousin Helen up to Littlestown right after breakfast. I took some squashs over to Cousin Mollies and up to Cousin Helens and Cousin Mollie gave me a can of thick mild to bring home. Catharine and I went over to town with Madeline. After dinner I took a book over to Aunt Marys that Cousin Helen left here and then I was playing on the piano. We went up to Madelines in the afternoon and stayed till nearly five oclock. Supper was nearly ready when we got home. After tea we were out on the porch awhile and then we came in

the house and were looking at old Pucks and then went to bed.

Fri 16 The weather was clear all day and warm. We all did our work up stairs before we came down stairs. I swept the front pavement. I was sewing for my dolls awhile before I had to help mamma at the dinner. Sally washed the dinner dishes. Harry came home before dinner and brought new horse along, but it is only on trial. I was sewing nearly all after noon and finished a dress I had began. We went over to Bec[k]y Taggs after tea. After we got back I wrote a letter to Ed.

Sat 17 The weather was clear all day. I made a little dress for Catharine this morning then I got some clothes ready for wash. Then we went and picked some blackberries for a pudding. After dinner I made a little blouse for my littlest baby then I made a dress for my next to my largest doll and then

we cleared up the balcony and came to supper. After supper we dressed and did not do much the rest of the evening. Cousin Helen has a little baby boy. Baby was born in the morning and they are going to call it Benjamin Franklin. [1976 Green Book lists Bernard Franklin.]

Sun 18 The weather was clear all day. Catharine and I were playing with our dolls all morning. Almost all the rest went to church. We went to Sunday School after dinner and when we came home went over to Aunt Marys and there was a whole crowd of people there. I was reading awhile after tea and then went to bed.

Mon 19 The weather was beautiful all day. When I came down stairs in the morning I swept the front porch and pavement then I washed out a few doll baby clothes and had them out on the line before breakfast. After breakfast I went up on the balcony and made a little cap a pin cushion and a shirt then I dampened

my dolls clothes and then was sewing awhile then I came down and ironed them and was sewing when Bess told us to go up to Aunt Helens. After dinner I was running around awhile then I gave some apples to the horses and then went up to the garret to watch Mr Byers fix the roof when I was called to come to help to catch chickens. I was sewing awhile and then had to go over to town and when I came home Madeline was here. We were playing dolls a while and then went and played Hie spy till supper time. After tea Bessy Catharine and I swept almost all the yard. I did not do much the rest of the evening.

Tues 20 The weather was beautiful all day. I was darning my stockings in the morning and sewed buttons on Bessys pillow cases. To day we are going to have a picnic. A lot of people are coming from Hanover and

we are going to have the picnic in the orchard. Papa and Uncle Lou fixed up the tent made a swing and put up the hammock in the orchard and put five flags up and it looks quite grand. After dinner Bess Catharine Harry and myself waxed the floor to dance on then I went up and dressed. We were not dressed long before they came and Ed came along. Some of them went up in the boat. When they came back we all went up in the orchard and were playing base ball, swinging and shooting marks. When we came down we went up in the boat but Ed, Harry and my self got out at horse shoe bend and came home and the boys went in swimming. There was thirty three people sat down at the table. After supper we were dancing and just before they went we had watermelon. Aunt Eliza and Aunt Kate did not go home with the crowd.

Wed 21 The weather was clear all day. Sally did not come all morning so we had to get breakfast and wash up the dishes. After the dishes were done I went over to town and was over nearly all morning. Before I went Madeline came over and stayed all day eat dinner [sic]. Catharine and Madeline washed out a lot of napkins in the morning. After dinner I was helping Harry to hunt grasshoppers and then we went in bathing and when we came home played I spy till supper time. After supper Mamma Aunt Kate and Aunt Eliza and papa went up to Noss's.

Thur 22 The weather was beautiful all day. I did not do much all morning but darn my stockings and then did not get them done. After dinner we were all busy packing up our things for we were going to Hanover that afternoon. Fri 23 The weather is cloudy and damp. I did not do any except I went up to the bank and got our Certificates renewed. Then Ed Uncle Lou and I were playing tennis. In the after noon Bertha Deal was over and Lannie Yingling and we were playing dolls and catchu [catcher?] and had a good time. After supper Aimie Wirt came down and we played tennis till it got to late then we went up with Aimie and stayed with her till it was time to go home.

Sat 24 The weather was clear nearly all day. I was looking at Cousin Helen and Ed playing chess then we went and played tennis. We were playing again in the afternoon and then played a while after supper. When we stopped Aimie and Jim and Lenard

came in and stayed. Part of the evening we were in at Aunt Sarah. We played dominoes cards and blind mans buff and then was dancing. They boys went home and then we took Aimie home.

Sun 25 The weather was beautiful. We all went to Sunday School and Church in the morning. We were lounging around all the after noon. I dressed after an early tea then the other folks went to church and I went over with Ed and read and then was walking up and down the street till they came home. Then Ed and I walk up to Jims and he came out so we went up to Aimie and were talking a long time. We were sitting on her steps awhile and then I went home.

After dinner we were practicing dancing and then went riding with Cousin George. After we came home were playing croquet with Grace Swartz till we had to go to supper. After supper we were playing tennis and when we were [done] we walked up street with the girls then Aimie had company so we went a little way with Mary. I was in at Aimie awhile. Wed 28 The weather was clear all day. I did not do much in the morning. I went up to Mr Weaver for some pictures for Cousin Kate and I got the girls and we played tennis till late.

I cleared off the breakfast table washed wiped and put away the dishes then I went down at the factory for Cousin Kate then went up street and got our fair tickets. The girls came down and we went back to the tennis court and played one set together, then Aimie and I played one and Catharine and Grace Hilt. After dinner we dressed and went up to Aimies and then she came out and we went up to Mary Bollinger and played still pond all the after noon. After supper Jim Lewis and Paul Koller and Aimie, May George, and Mary Bollinger came down and then we went back to the tennis court. After we were done playing

Fri 30 The weather is beautiful and clear, was clear all day. I washed out two gamps [guimpes?] and three hand kerchiefs after breakfast. Aimie and Maurice came down in the morning to play tennis and of course went and played. After dinner we went up to Aimie to go up to May George but Aimie said we should not go for awhile as it was so hot so we stayed there. We had a nice time at Mays when we did go. We played tennis after supper and then went up to Aimie but did not stay very long. Aunt Eliza had a little party at her house tonight and I helped to wait on the table. I danced dancing in the barn, twice with Ed and had a good time.

Tues 2 The weather was cloudy in the morning but cleared off before dinner time. Catharine and I went out to the fair grounds at nine and came home at eleven. I did not do much of any thing after dinner. About four oclock I was walking up and down street and I saw Aimie Wirt beckoning to me so I went up and we were talking awhile then she went and dressed and I came. After supper we played tennis and went up street with Aimie.

This morning Ed started for school way up in Massachusetts and I went out to the train with him and he put on long trousers for the first time. After dinner we went out to the fair for our things and got pretty wet. We were

After dinner I went up to the National bank with Cousin Helen and down to the postoffice. The rest of the afternoon I did not do much. After supper Aimie and Mary came down and we played euchre all evening. After they went home I went over to Aunt Eliza.

Sun 8 The weather has been clear all day. We went Sunday School and church in the morning. After dinner Cousin Kate and I took a nap. After supper we were up to Aimie and Jim came up and we had a nice talk all of us together. After we came home and Dr. Grove came down and we all went in the parlor and Dr Grove and I sat on the sofa and talked.

I was running up street all morning. Cousin Helen and Cousin Kate took us up to the photographer and we got three small pictures taken of us. After dinner Aimie came down and stayed till it was almost [time] for us to come home. We walked up to her house and was talking awhile. Then we came home and by the time we got down Harry was there with the team. We stopped along the road and got chickapins when ever we saw some and we got a good many. Clarence Denison was here when we reached home. I went to bed early.

Wed 11 The weather was cloudy all day. We were up in the boat almost all morning, Clarence, Bessy, Catharine and I. We were all up in the boat. After we came home we helped Bessy to pick lima beans then set the table and then went and picked up the nuts. In the after noon we were all playing blind man buff in Uncle Lou[s] parlor. After supper we did not do much and I sent to bed early.

Thur 12 The weather was cloudy and was raining almost all day. with us. They and two other men are surveying a road for a railroad and are boarding over at Harvey Taggs. They were over to see us once before but I forget when.

Mon 18 Papa got a new stove. It is an open grate and called the Aldine. It is all antique bronze and very nice. Mr Adam Yingling put it in. We did nothing in the evening except study our lessons.

Tues 19 We went to school as usual. This dinner James Stansbury died. He was 13 years old. As soon as I came home from school Mamma said that Mr Lehman and his men were surveying and then I went up to the chestnut and there thy were. Then I stayed with them till they came home.

Wed 20 We went to school and did not do any thing except recite my lessons the whole day with the others. After supper as I was playing on the piano Mr Ernest Lehman came then I went and dressed and came down and after while Mr George Lehman came to. We sat talking for a good while then we had a concert. Bessy played the piano, Uncle Lou the fiddle, Harry the comb, Papa the bones, and Catharine and I sang.

Then we had wine, cake, and apples for refreshments. Soon after the refreshments they left.

Thur 21 We have no school as James Stansbury is going to be burried. Mr Lehman and Mr Ernest Lehman and the two other men left this morning. Papa, Mamma, and Uncle Lou went to James funeral. After dinner I began a sewing bag for Aimie Wirt and got it almost finished. Did not do much in the evening.

Fri 22 Did not have any school. I cleaned up my room in the morning. I started a handkerchief box and got the sides half done. I did not do much in the after noon. We had Aunt Kate for supper. She is staying over at Aunt Marys. In the evening Cousin Mollie, Cousin Will, Cousin Frand [Frank?] and C. Helen all came over.

Sat 23 Mamma is not very well. She was in bed almost all day. I was sewing at my handkerchief awhile and finished it in the after noon. I did not do much the rest of the day.

Sun 24 The weather was lovely and clear today. Momma is not well yet. Papa, Uncle Lou, Bessy and Harry walked to church and Mama, Catharine and I stayed home.

On Thursday evening Uncle Lou and Bessy went down to Miss Mary Boyle at Westminster and took supper there and spent the evening.

Sat 147 Today Bessy, Catharine, and I went to Littlestown and did not get back till half past two. As soon as we had eaten our dinner we went over to Madelines and got her to go long for moss up to Jeranih [?] Myers. In the evening did not do much.

Sun 8 It rained all day so we could not go to church or Sunday School but we had no church. I did not do much all day.

Mon 9 I did not go to school today. I finished a little sewing a X-mas present and started a cuff for a mitten for my self. In the evening Uncle Louis, Catharine and I played

two games of Authors.

Tues 10 I did not go to school today either. I practised a half a hour an hour [sic] before we washed the dishes. In the morning I cut out a watch case for Pappa to give him on X-mas and got it finished in the evening with help of Bessy. After Miss Florence had given me my music lesson I walked over to town with her.

Wed 11 I went to school today but did not want to. We are to go to butcher tomorrow but killed the hogs to day. We only killed two and did not do much the rest of the day. I mean in the evening.

Thur 12 I went to school to day and after I came home Catharine and I went up to Madelines and played Hey Spi and Hy Spie the wolf till dark.

Fri 13 I went to school today and did not do any thing much in the evening.

Sat 14 Helped Bessy to clean up the room and then after dinner made some Hickory nut taffy. Read in the evening.

Sun 15 Have no church or Sunday School today. Did not do anything all morning and spent the afternoon up at Cousin Helen's and lost my gold

breast pin and did not find it yet.

Mon 16 I did not go to school today, I am not going all week. I did not do much all day. After supper in the evening we made some chains out of colored paper and then went in the library and cut up high. We had got some false faces down and had them on.

Tues 17 Mamma and Papa went to Westminster today and in the morning Catharine and I made some more chains. After dinner we went down to the shop and were skating on our roller skates along time. Miss Florence gave me a music lesson this evening and stayed to tea.

Wed 18 Mamma bought two dolls to give Miss Sally Steffy's little nieces and Bessy and I were up stairs all morning sewing clothes for them and then after dinner Bessy went to Littlestown and Catharine and I helped Mamma to bake her fruit cake. Then Uncle Lou made us a box to stand the Christmas tree in. Then I practiced three quarters of an hour after supper. Mamma Bessy and I sewed all evening at the dolls and got them finished all but to finish one dress.

Thur 19 I did not do much all morning. In the after noon Uncle Lou took Catharine and I to Westminster. I got a pair of gum shoes and two Christmas Cards and Uncle Lou gave me a box of paper for a Xmas present.

Fri 20 I did not do much all morning. In the after noon I helped mamma to dress a doll for Catharine but did not get it finished. Miss Florence gave me my last music lesson this evening. After supper we went up to Madelines and stayed till half past nine.

Sat 21 I helped Mamma to bake cakes almost all morning and swept the back porch and pavement. Adger dinner Catharine and I went up to Mr Bill Bankert to see him have his barn raised and stayed till four oclock. After supper I did not do much.

Sun 22 Catharine, Bessy and I stayed home and the rest went to church. I did not do much all morning. Went up to Madelines and stayed till dusk.

Mon 23 We baked cakes all day and Catharine and I got an invitation to a party at Aimie Wirt's on

Thursday and I got a letter from Ed. He said he would come down to Littlestown on Xmas eve and we are going back to Hanover with him on Thursday afternoon.

Tues 24 This morning Bess and I finished dressing Catharines dolls and then I helped her to clean up her room. After dinner we cleaned up the front room and library then Uncle Lou fixed up our Christmas tree and Catharine and I trimmed it then Bess and I took some things over to the post office.

Wed 25 This is Christmas day and Papa pulled a pansy off down in the flower bed. I got for presents a gold breast pin, two 3 pairs of stick pins, a bottle [of] colonge 6 handkerchiefs a little vase and a few more little things. I went to church in the morning with mamma and after I came home went over to Madelines and stayed till dinner. In the evening Cousins Frank, Herbert, and James and Mr Jos Boyle came over

and played cards. Madeline came along Eddie came while they were playing cards. After supper Ed, Harry, Uncle Lou and Bess all dressed up and went up to Cousin Helens. We went up before them and stayed till late. We danced and had a good time.
